The upgraded Acer Chromebook Plus 516 GE boasts one of the largest displays among laptops, featuring the latest AI capabilities within the ChromeOS lineup.

Launched in May, this model succeeds the first-generation Acer Chromebook 516 GE. I had considered the earlier version mainly for its impressive 16-inch screen, but I decided to wait for a superior option in the Plus range.

Last year, Google launched the Chromebook Plus category to elevate the performance of ChromeOS laptops by integrating AI features not found in standard models. While the original Acer Chromebook 516 GE met many of my preferences, it fell short in build quality and performance compared to its successor.

I was particularly drawn to the built-in access to Google’s Gemini AI and the additional benefits that come with the Chromebook Plus designation, including exclusive software and services. The new 516 GE fulfills these expectations, combining enhanced capabilities for both personal and professional tasks along with improved gaming potential, making it a compelling choice.

A Worthy Upgrade

This 16-inch quad extended graphics array (WQXGA) model is equipped with an Intel Core i5 120U processor, Intel Graphics, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of PCIe Gen4 SSD storage.

The “GE” in its name stands for “Gaming Edition,” highlighting its unique capability to deliver cloud-based gaming features with impressive performance. While it doesn’t include a dedicated AMD or Nvidia gaming processor, the optimized circuitry ensures smooth game streaming with minimal lag from cloud servers.

The wait for this upgraded Chromebook has been worthwhile. I chose this model to enhance my work setup with a more flexible, capable ChromeOS laptop featuring a larger screen. Since Chromebooks typically have displays no larger than 14 inches, this new release immediately caught my attention.

Priced at $649, the Chromebook Plus 516 GE offers solid performance and represents a significant upgrade from my other devices, whether running Linux or ChromeOS. The larger display, Chromebook Plus designation, and improved performance are hard to find in other Chromebook models at any price.

Outstanding Configuration Benefits

Acer’s hardware strikes an excellent balance between price and performance. The superior image quality and high pixel density provide a premium experience. The 516 GE is both fast and comfortable, two essential qualities for someone like me who spends many hours typing.

Powered by a newer Intel Core i5 120U processor, this model is said to be twice as fast as the previous i5-1240P. If you’re new to Chromebooks, don’t let the 8GB of memory deter you. ChromeOS, which is essentially an enhanced Chrome browser with built-in tools functioning as an operating system, runs smoothly without being hindered by RAM limitations.

Exceptional Audio Quality

The audio improvement in this device is remarkable. It features four upward-firing speakers—two on each side of the keyboard—that deliver the best sound quality I’ve experienced in a Chromebook. Thanks to DTS Audio and Smart Amplifier technology, the audio is clear and distortion-free.

The sound system includes force-canceling woofers that eliminate unwanted vibrations, though it doesn’t support Dolby Atmos. Still, the stereo speakers produce loud, solid volume and impressive sound quality.

Enhanced Display Features

The 16-inch IPS 16:10 QHD 120Hz display boasts a brightness of 350 nits and a resolution of 2560 x 1600. Using WQXGA technology, it achieves higher pixel density for sharper images than lower-resolution screens.

This panel offers more screen real estate, finer details, and an enhanced viewing experience. With a 120Hz refresh rate, it outpaces the standard 60Hz found on most other Chromebooks.

However, it lacks a touchscreen, which I consider a minor drawback. Gamers wanting to play Android games might find this feature limiting, but for my purposes, a touchscreen isn’t essential.

Since this laptop isn’t a two-in-one, I rarely need to reach across the clamshell design to use the display for input. For my needs, a non-detachable keyboard is perfectly adequate.

Superior Build Quality

The build quality, keyboard feel, and touchpad response can often diminish the appeal of lesser Chromebooks. Fortunately, the Acer 516 GE excels in all three areas, offering a substantial physical upgrade.

Weighing 3.7 pounds, this model presents a classy two-tone black design. My only minor complaint is that the smooth, glossy obsidian black exterior easily shows fingerprints, which can be difficult to clean.

The aluminum frame of the Acer Chromebook Plus 516 GE is sturdy and feels solid in hand, providing a sense of reliability. The RGB backlit keyboard is another strong feature, appealing to both gamers and professionals, with multiple color options and brightness settings.

This laptop includes one HDMI 2.1 display port, but I would have preferred two, as a second HDMI would be beneficial for connecting additional peripherals. It also offers two USB Type-C ports (which support DisplayPort and USB charging), one USB Type-A port, an Ethernet RJ-45 port, and a 3.5mm headphone/speaker jack.

The 65-watt-hour Lithium-Ion battery delivers a genuine 10-hour lifespan. In my tests, it lasted just 20 minutes shy of that estimate before running out.

I was impressed with the front-facing full HD camera (1920 x 1080) capable of 60 FPS, especially when compared to the typical low-quality webcams on most Chromebooks. However, its image quality doesn’t quite match that of the third-party external webcams I usually prefer. Features like temporal noise reduction and a blue glass lens provide acceptable but not exceptional results.

Conclusion

The Acer Chromebook Plus 516 GE stands out as one of the top options in the Chromebook Plus lineup. It functions exceptionally well as both a cloud-based gaming laptop and a versatile device for personal and business use. Pair it with a large external monitor and mouse, and you have a practical desktop alternative.

This model surpassed my expectations for usability and performance. Acer has incorporated essential features that elevate this Chromebook Plus above its predecessor.

If you’re considering a purchase, be cautious. The earlier non-Plus version is still available at a reduced price, so double-check to ensure you’re getting the upgraded model by verifying these details:

  1. Model number: CBG516-2H-59S4
  2. Build date: 2024
  3. Chromebook Plus branding on the cover

Acer also plans to release at least one additional version of this Chromebook Plus 516 GE, which will feature 16GB of RAM, greater storage capacity, and various color options.
